As the saying goes, your greatest assets walk out the door every day at 5pm. In an organization that orients around digital production, some key factors apply when sourcing talent.
- Hire for “smart, creative and gets things done”. Build the team around problem solving, toward clear, measurable goals. Encourage people to take the initiative to overcome obstacles rather than signaling virtue in the form of blockers. There are many tools designed to optimize for this, including thought experiments, probes into extra-curricular activities, social media audits and personality profiling.
- Communicate a framework whereby team members can advance, either in technical or management responsibilities, through success, should they so desire. The advantage of doing this is retaining institutional knowledge longer, which is expensive to replace. The alternative is seeing people leave for a promotion.
- Create a workplace that caters to intelligence, creativity and productivity, understanding that not all people work the same. Consider flex-time, hybrid-offshore, mobile workspaces.
